In October 2009, Shelby County Schools was awarded a U.S. Department of Education Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) grant. Upon receiving the award, a full-time Arts Infusion Facilitator was hired to oversee grant operations and program implementation. The grant program was introduced to 10 elementary and 6 middle schools in 3 phases:
Phase 1- January 2010 (4 schools)
Phase 2- August 2010 (6 schools)
Phase 3- January 2011 (6 schools)
During the grant term, teaching teams from the schools received intensive professional development, conducted arts infusion school visits, and wrote a K-8 arts infusion curriculum. During the course of the grant, the University of Memphis Center for Research in Educational Policy (CREP) conducted the project evaluation.
